[Extract from "Gathering the Faithful Remnant" - page 138 ]
Before proceeding to the rest of this passage, note that the central element of the Gospel is "Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (c/f 1 Corinthians 2:2). The task of the church is to exalt HIM, faithfully and scripturally presenting HIM in the Gospel. HE is the One who will attract souls to Himself, granting them repentance and faith to appropriate the fullness of the salvation he has provided through ffis death at Calvary. It seems the modern church is failing to grasp this; else they would not be taken up so much with new techniques, the inventing of every form of gimmick and entertainment device to attract people to the church! It seems we have made even the "supernatural" a mere entertainment to draw the crowds to the church, so that whether or not a method is biblical never seems to enter the mind - as long as it works! That is the current test of legitimacy. And so raw pragmatism has become the driving force in so much of the "mission" of the church, driven with a passion to do whatever is possible to stimulate enormous numerical growth - and at the expense of much that is crucial to our true life as a church. Numbers appear to be "the name of the game". And many church leaders will go to great lengths, whatever the financial outlay (often charged up to the local church's account!), to visit these increasingly popular "mega-churches" in order to learn the "secrets" of their amazing growth! They then attempt to put into action someone else's "vision".
Now notice how this account in John 12 continues, with, (i) the response of the people who had been standing by and listening to the words of the (verse 29), and (ii) the clear definition of how God brings His saving grace and power to bear upon the souls of men and women.
"But THOUGH HE HAD DONE SO MANY MIRACLES before therm yet THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN HIM.. that the saying of Isaiah the prophet might befidfllled, which he spoke Lord, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore THEY COULD NOT BELIEVE, because Isaiah said again, He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart,. that they should not see with their eyes, or understand with their heart, and be converted, and 1 should heal them. Isaiah said these things, when he and spoke of him." (Emphasis added)
