Berean Beacon Ministry

CWM is making these notes available to you on the understanding that CWM is not necessarily endorsing or recommending the Berean Beacon Ministry as outlined below. We urge all readers to carry out their own berean tests.

Berean Beacon of Oregon is primarily an evangelistic ministry promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever possible and to whomever will listen. This ministry places particular emphasis on the evangelisation and conversion of Roman Catholics. The other main thrust of the ministry is to inform evangelical Christians by speaking and by distributing literature and tapes concerning Roman Catholicism.

[ Prev. ]  The scientific world is frantically searching for a cure....This is an ailment many of us suffer from and may not as yet have been diagnosed; however, now you may be able to discuss it with your loved ones and try to explain what really happened to you all those times you tried so hard to accomplish something and didn't.

They call it the "But First Syndrome". You know, it's when I decide to do the laundry, and I start down the hall and notice the newspaper on the table. OK, I'm going to do the laundry...
BUT FIRST I'm going to read the newspaper. After that, I notice the mail on the table. OK, I'll just put the newspaper in the recycle stack.....
BUT FIRST I'll look through that pile of mail and see if there are any bills to be paid. Yes, now where's the checkbook?
Oops......there's the empty glass from yesterday on the coffee table. I'm going to look for that checkbook... BUT FIRST I need to put the glass in the sink. I head for the kitchen, look out the window, and notice my poor flowers need a drink of water. I put the glass in the sink, and darn it, there's the remote for the TV on the kitchen counter. What's it doing here? I'll just put it away.....
BUT FIRST I need to water those plants. Head for door and.....Aaaagh! Okay, I'll put that remote away and water the plants....BUT FIRST I need to feed the dog.............
End of day: Laundry is not done, newspapers are still on the floor, glass isstill in the sink, bills are unpaid, checkbook is still lost, and the dog ate the remote control ...... And, when I try to figure out how come nothing got done all day, I'm baffled because ...... I KNOW I was BUSY ALL DAY!! I realize this condition is serious...........and I'd get help!.........
BUT FIRST.............. I think.... I'll check my e-mail!

Dear Friends:

I keep receiving notification of an article about Harry Potter in a magazine called "The Onion". The article is entitled "Harry Potter Books Spark Rise In Satanism Among Children". This article is currently being promoted in many Christian circles -- especially fundamentalist ones -- as proof that Harry Potter is satanic. While I have not the slightest doubt that Harry Potter books promote witchcraft among young people, the problem is that we need to ensure that we use intelligent, truthful criticism as proof of our case. "The Onion" magazine is a satirical journal, and the Harry Potter article it has published is a complete spoof, which is intended to lampoon a hyper-fundamentalist scare story about Satanism.

The article purports to contain children's comments about the influence Harry Potter books have had on their interest in Satanism, plus extracts from a purported interview in the London Times with Harry Potter authoress J.K. Rowling in which she says some pretty off-the-wall things about Satan and the Lord Jesus. The problem is that there never was any such interview in the Times on that date. That "Onion" article is a wind-up, designed to play on the fears of naive Christians who have an inordinate fear of Satan. If someone sends it to you, please don't promote it as proof of anything, other than that the editors of "The Onion" have a rather sick sense of humour. The spoof Harry Potter article itself is available at http://theonion.com/onion3625/harry_potter.html . Also, just so you can see that the magazine is solely satirical and spoofing, visit their article archive site at http://theonion.com/archive/archive_society.html .

Now if you want some good and trustworthy articles about Harry Potter, which engage in genuine criticism from a Christian standpoint, go to http://www.crossroad.to/ where you'll find four interesting pieces.

Please forward this letter to as many people as you can so they'll be forewarned about the satirical nature of "The Onion", and the fact that it proves nothing about Harry Potter.

Dear Friends:

One thing that never ceases to amaze me in the Christian scene is the way that so many will clutch onto any straw, so long as it serves their vested interests. That spoof Harry Potter article in "The Onion" which I referred to earlier props up many people's beliefs about the books. So they refuse to accept that the article is a spoof. The idea seems to be: "What does it matter if it's a myth, so long as it serves as propaganda?"

One woman wrote to me this evening saying how a well-known e-mail "discernment" list had sent out the Harry Potter article as fact, and when she wrote back telling them that it was a spoof, they kicked her off the list! She said to me: "It makes Christians look dumb and foolish when we jump on these "bandwagons", accepting anything just to prove our point. Christians should stick to the word of God".

People so much want to believe that Harry Potter drives kids to Satanism that they will even continue to plug an article which has no basis in fact. You'd be amazed at the corruption, bad scholarship and downright nastiness which takes place in the name of Christianity, even in so-called discernment circles.

It's enough to make you want to "sit in that cafe" reserved for "defectors from the petty wars that shell-shock love away"! Anyone care to join me?

Dear Friends:

A number of you have asked for more information on Christian analysis of the "Harry Potter" phenomenon. There is an in-depth article in the most recent edition of the Journal of the Spiritual Counterfeits Project. The whole journal is given over to an analysis of the growth of witchcraft in the world today, with one of the articles being entitled "Harry Potter: Occult Cosmology and the Corrupted Imagination" by Alison Lentini. You will find details of this article and this edition of the SCP Journal at http://www.scp-inc.org/publications/journals/J2304/index.html.
